Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you." But he answered them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it." Luke 8: 19-20
This verse always caught my attention. Jesus' love for God was so deep and unconditional, that he specifically says that his mother and brothers are those who not only hear the word of God, but PUT it into "practice" (in some versions). This is just an amazing scripture to me. Obviously, I could never get to Jesus' level, but I don't think I could ever deny my family.
However, Jesus was not denying his family here as most people probably read this. The crowds that gathered to listen to Jesus' teachings usually didn't fully grasp the true meaning of his words and teachings. In fact, most people didn't...which ultimately caused Jesus' fate.
It's here that I understand how important the church is and how important it is to attend church. Whether it be at a physical building or someone's house. Simply put, the church is considered the "body"
Yes, I have a family. A family that comes directly from my blood line. But, family is just not limited to the flesh. My family, or my brothers and sisters, are those people belonging to the body of Christ. Christians...simply stated. Those who accept Jesus, his teachings, repent and are baptized. What the Bible refers to as Christians. These are the people I will see in the next life. These are the people that hear God's word and put it into practice.
